On a steamy-breezy Friday, a refreshing beverage (preferably alcoholic) calls my name. So four of us recently headed to Heist Brewery in Charlotte to see what their “Twisted American Cuisine” was all about. First: the beer. With a full-on view of the stainless vats cooking up batches of brew, I knew we were in for a wicked treat. Our friends embraced autumn with a flight of pumpkin, ranging from light orange to deep brown, each with varying hints of the beloved squash. Our gastro-expert server checked our beer preferences, then swiftly chose a perfect flight, spanning Heist’s own brews paired with ambers and stouts.
Then came the tapas-style plates of twisted deliciousness: Duck flatbread. Salmon belly tacos. Lamb meatballs with forest mushroom cream and fried basil. Free-range chicken with smoked jalapeno bacon. Brushcetta with a balsamic-fig reduction. Ground brisket and porterhouse tail mini burgers. Unbelievable combinations that tantalized our taste buds.

Small plates = bold flavor at Heist, where the signature Duck Flatbread (center plate) and other culinary concoctions bring craft brew groupies coming back for more.

The food art made us thirsty for more, so we indulged in Heist’s famous Beer Cocktails. Vodka/elderflower/grapefruit/ Pale Ale.
Stout/Jim Beam/blackberry puree.
Bacardi/honey/ lemon/Pale Ale. Beyond/belief/brilliant/beer.
But don’t try this at home! The ratio of brew to fruit must be perfectly calculated.
Chew and brew that’s memorable. Which is why this NoDa hot-spot gets 16 thumbs up for four discerning adults. Oh, wait. Seeing double. Those beer cocktails will get you every time.
